Two reviews from dollface lovebug Evan Coyne Maloney.

>bt: Boomerang

22 February 2005 @ 5:58PM

Maybe you’ve heard about these billboards that will taunt Hollywood’s glitterati as they shuffle into the Oscars for their annual festival of self-congratulation.

Well, Anna of Liberty Belles decided to go out and ask some Hollywood residents what they thought of the signs. The resulting video, called Boomerang, shows that most people were a little confused. But one thing’s clear: Anna’s great on camera. I’m betting this won’t be her last video.

and:

Until recently, the official seal of Los Angeles County bore three very small cross emblems recalling the county’s heritage and founding. A lawsuit by the ACLU ended that, and the religious symbols have since been scrubbed from the seal.

The Constitution’s establishment clause forms the legal basis of the ACLU’s argument:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...

To me, it seems pretty extreme to argue that the presence of a religious symbol on a county seal is tantamount to the establishment of an official religion. If you’ve seen a supermarket tabloid in the last fifty years, you’d know that Los Angeles County isn’t exactly being run by fundamentalist Christians.

Nevertheless, enough judges agree with the ACLU that, bit by bit, different facets of our country’s history are being etched out if they contain any hint of the religious backgrounds of our founders. That’s as much a crime against history as pretending that Martin Luther King wasn’t black.

The controversy surrounding the Los Angeles County seal gave an opportunity for Anna of Liberty Belles to perform her own video investigation, complete with a guest appearance of Dennis Prager.

SEALED FOR YOUR PROTECTION

Saturday morning's event was host to several narrative and documentary shorts. Anna Z. and Jeffers Dodge opened with "Sealed for Your Protection," a 12-minute look at how the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unilaterally decided to remove a minute cross from the LA County Seal for fear of litigation from the ACLU. This event became national news, and a grassroots effort to force the county to put the decision in the hands of voters sprung out of the controversy.

"Sealed For Your Protection" (12 min.) addressed the removal of the cross from the Los Angeles County Seal and featured interviews, with Townhall.com columnist Dennis Prager, former L.A. Mayor Jim Hahn, ACLU lawyers, and L.A. residents. The documentary was very well done and had the ideal interviewer in free speech advocate Anna Z. (picture a slightly kinder and gentler Ann Coulter).

After almost two years, I've decided to post the film festival reviews of "Sealed..." since, well, since I never did. LOL.

Here's one, from:
LIBERTY FILM FESTIVAL: DAY 2 [bankofkev.blog-city.com]

This short film details how the ACLU sued the LA County to take off a small cross that was on the county seal of Los Angeles. The county caved and took the small cross off the seal. Well director Anna Z. & Jeffers Dodge thought this whole issue would make an interesting film.

He was so right.

While the film only runs 12 minutes it makes great use of its time. Also the filmmakers did a smart move by casting the uber-charismatic and uber-cute Anna-Z as the narrator/star. The best part is where Anna-Z goes into the ACLU headquarters and asks them pointed questions (You will notice that the ACLU front desk person hides behind a glass screen) and gets the run around from its staff.

A interesting thing is when Dennis Prager(wearing a Roger Stuart suit) came on screen to talk about the controversy the audience cheered. Cool.

The film is also incredibly well made with good camerawork, editing, music and sound. The music they use is quite good as well. I also liked the “horror footage” they staged to help drive home the “fear” of the cross. The audience reaction was resounding. Good job !
